The etiquette, in one list

  • Cover your seat. The baseline is what the couple pays for your seat: the venue's price per table, plus service charge and GST, divided by 10.
  • Then add for closeness. Colleagues give about the seat cost. Friends add 10 to 20%. Close family often gives well above it.
  • Bringing a partner. Double it. Each seat is paid for.
  • Lucky numbers. Even amounts, often ending in 8 (S$188, S$268, S$288). Avoid 4 anywhere in the amount: give S$238 or S$258, not S$240 or S$248.
  • Can't make it. Not expected, but a kind gesture: S$50 to S$200 depending on how close you are. RSVP early so they can release your seat.
  • Church or ROM only. With no banquet, S$50 to S$100, or a gift.
  • Malay weddings. Usually a smaller green packet: S$20 to S$50, more if you are close.
  • Indian weddings. Amounts commonly end in 1 (S$101, S$151, S$201).
  • How to give. Clean notes in a red packet with your name on it, handed in at the reception table. PayNow is increasingly fine, but check first.

Tea ceremony ang bao

At the tea ceremony it is the elders who give: an ang bao or jewellery for the couple, after they are served tea. Amounts vary a lot between families. Common ranges:

Who Common amount
Grandparents S$88 to S$188
Parents S$288 to S$888, or jewellery
Uncles, aunts and other relatives S$50 to S$288, or jewellery
The couple, to younger siblings who serve them A small ang bao, often ending in 8

What to write on a wedding ang bao

Write your name on the back so the couple knows who it is from. On the front, a four-character blessing is a nice touch:

Blessing Pinyin Meaning
百年好合 bai nian hao he A hundred years of harmony
永结同心 yong jie tong xin Bound together with one heart
白头偕老 bai tou xie lao Grow old together
天作之合 tian zuo zhi he A match made in heaven
早生贵子 zao sheng gui zi May you soon have children

If you are the couple

Ang bao rarely covers the whole dinner. Attendance is never 100%, and the venue is paid before the ang bao comes in. Budget for the full banquet, and treat ang bao as money back.
